Understanding the Foundations: Coaching and Somatic Coaching

To provide a clear perspective on Somatic Coaching, let's first delve into the foundations of coaching itself.

What is Coaching?

Coaching is rooted in Humanistic Psychology, founded on the belief that everyone possesses the resources to understand themselves, change attitudes and beliefs, and self-direct their behavior. It is a conversation where individuals feel heard and gain insights into their own experiences. The coach's role is to facilitate the individual's sensemaking rather than solving their problems. Coaching focuses on the present and designing the future, emphasizing 'being with' and 'accepting' someone else's processing.

What is Somatic Coaching?

Somatic Coaching, or Body-oriented Coaching, goes beyond traditional coaching methods by involving the whole self, often referred to as the 'bodymind.' This holistic approach recognizes the significant role the body plays in our overall well-being, harnessing the valuable information and insights it holds.

Unlike traditional coaching, Somatic Coaching doesn't separate the body and the mind. It integrates the thinking mind with the body's wisdom in embodied self-awareness, fostering forward-moving growth that leads to momentum around unblocking. It is spontaneous, improvised, empowering, and hopeful.

The Body's Memory

Difficult experiences, including trauma, can manifest in physical sensations and behaviors, leaving imprints on the body's nervous system. Neuroscientific studies show that traumatic experiences can impact the brain's structure and functioning. Somatic techniques aim to release stored tensions, allowing the nervous system to learn new ways of access that promote safety and healing.

ADHD Coaching

As a psycho-educational consultant, I have spent five years at the Centre for Specific Learning Difficulties and Disorders, specializing in the assessment and treatment of neurodiversity, particularly ADHD and executive functioning. My work encompasses supporting children, adolescents, and adults in identifying and addressing challenges related to both school and home life. These challenges include emotional development, attachment issues, relational patterns, behavioral difficulties, and learning adaptations.

I integrate my expertise in these areas with the Somatic Coaching approach, creating a holistic coaching process. Adults with ADHD, whether formally diagnosed or not, often face struggles in various aspects of their lives, such as:

  • Organization at home

  • Relationship and attachment difficulties

  • Emotional overwhelm

  • Setting and maintaining boundaries

  • Overcoming limiting beliefs

  • Dealing with shame and guilt over perceived inadequacies

  • Comparing themselves to others

  • Achieving self-acceptance and acceptance from others

  • Concealing their diagnosis due to fear of judgment

My goal is to provide tailored support to help individuals navigate these challenges and thrive.
